Tough Love: Refraining from Enabling

Having seen the world in its ugliest states, with garbage floating down rivers in third world countries, people living tough lives in the streets of NYC and everywhere else, poverty and drugs running rampant in lonely towns all over the United States, I question what my place is in helping people in these and similar situations. The Bible is clear when it tells us to love people and how to love them: Matthew 7:12 is what many people know as the Golden Rule. Jesus says, “So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.” In Matthew 22: 36-40, Jesus gets interrogated by a lawyer and responds accordingly: “And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neig...

What is Adultery? Is remarriage ever permitted? What about Spousal Abuse? How do we move forward?

Grizzly Bear track, Rocky Mountains, Montana. The Seventh Commandment tells us in Exodus chapter twenty to not commit adultery. “You shall not commit adultery” is verbatim in most popular translations. But what does this mean? It seems that sometimes it is thought that adultery only means unfaithful to one’s spouse. But other times Jesus says things like “ Even if you marry someone who has been married then you have committed adultery ” (paraphrase of Matthew 5:32). I think the best way to answer the question of adultery is to think one step further. I think we should answer biblically speaking, the grounds for remarriage . Reaching further would give the argument greater strength. Three Possible Situations It seems that the Bible defines three areas for remarriage, but we should continue to refine the standard from which to catapult. In 1 Timothy chapter three, we observe the qualifications of an overseer. In this, Paul says that one of the qualifications must be that he is t...

What is Eating at You?

#shoutyourabortion = #shoutyourbulimianervosa Abortion is quite strange. One of the main arguments I hear for it is that it is good because the mother is unable to afford or to take care of the baby. But everyone knows about adoption. So what now? Another argument I hear is that women will have abortions if Roe v Wade is reversed in back alleys and such, so we shouldn’t reverse it. But when is it ok to murder a baby? Is it ok to murder a baby when women will be getting infections because they have unsterile environments for abortion? Seriously? Please tell me a better reason, a more convincing reason when killing babies is ok.  Something else I have to mention is that it seems that pro-choice adherents think that pro-lifers and abolitionists believe that the baby is of more value than the woman, but this is not the case. The idea is simple. Both the mother and the baby inside her are human, therefore they have the same value. I think of abortion like Bulimia Ne...

Baha'i Faith Encounter

I attended a Race Unity Day event put on by the Baha’i faith community at our local city park and had a conversation for about 3 hours with several followers of Baha’u’llah. One of them discussed things with me more than the others, but not at first. Since it was Race Unity Day for the Baha’i, we eventually started the conversation with the idea of whether or not world peace was the thing that mattered most in the world. Baha’i are extremely motivated to promote world peace. They think that the problem with the world is that it lacks unity, which would ultimately provide world peace. This first part of the conversation was with Doug (names changed for privacy). Doug implied that world peace mattered more than anything, but I reminded him of the problem of suicides where we live. I asked him if this is why they commit suicide, because of the lack of world peace. He reluctantly said, “Probably not,” but then I offered a better solution to what is wrong with the world, which is...
